Description

The State, opened in 1921 as Blackstone Theater vaudeville house, has an extraordinary history. Designed by renowned architects Newhouse & Bernham, this historic and ornate 1,600 seat movie palace boasts a classic terra-cotta facade, a flashy marquee, detailed plaster work and exquisite mosaic floor tile thru the lobby and outside. Situated in downtown South Bend 2 blocks from the College Football Hall of Fame and across from the Univ. of Notre Dame downtown visitors' center, The State has been well-preserved by public-private collaboration. The property is ideal for a variety of theatrical, cultural and commercial purposes.

This property is entwined in the lore of many famous vaudevillians who strode its stage, and in June 1934 outlaw John Dillinger and his gang robbed their last bank on the same city block. A street shootout with police occurred, and contemporary accounts claim that the fleeing gang' s bullets struck the theater' s upper facade, where marks are still visible today.
