Its ornate appeal consists of a terra cotta façade, a flashy marquee, detailed plaster work, mosaic floor tile in the lobby and entrance, and marble work throughout. The State Theater was designed by architects Newhouse & Bernham in the Classical Revival era.

The theater was also the site of the world premiere of Knute Rockne All American, a classic film starring Ronald Reagan as The Gipper.
