Royse City was founded in 1885 when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad came through the area. After its founding, Royse City preserved its small town status due to its proximity to Garland (21 miles away) and Dallas (30 miles). In the mid-1960s, Interstate 30 was constructed just south of the city, and at that point, the city grew south to meet the interstate. In 2000, Royse City had a population of 2,957.
