During the Civil War, Lewis Steward, son of Marcus and Ursula Hollister, formed a private bank in Plano and ran it successfully under his name. In 1876, he ran for Governor and sold the bank to Edgar Henning. In 1893,the bank failed as a consequence of national financial crisis. In 1897, Julian and Deering Steward reformed the bank as the First State Bank, and opened a location on the Southwest corner of Main and West Streets. In 1917, the Stewards built the bank building at 100 W. Main, and moved to that new location. In 1928, the First State Bank Merged with the Plano State Bank, and closed during the Great Depression, paying its depositors $0.49 cents on the dollar. In 1943, the bank re-opened under a charter issued to Warren Henning, William Pope, Louis Sears, Erwin Telling, and Charles Wall. In 1967, the bank moved the current location of the current City Hall. Thereafter, it housed a variety of business, including law offices for the late Judge Sears, a pinball arcade and a Mexican restaurant. In 1983, Peter Krentz established his law office there where it continued to operate for the next 40 years.
