The Irish Channel is so named because it was settled by a wave of Irish immigrants who arrived in New Orleans in the mid 19th century. At that time, it was a new working class neighborhood. The immigrants were part of the peasant population that came to the New World to escape the devastating famine in Ireland. There were also a number of German immigrants who made the Irish Channel their home, along with a smattering of other European immigrants such as Italians, as well as some Free People of Color and Native Americans. Lots of immigrants literally got off the boat and remained in the neighborhood where they landed. And many found jobs on the docks of that same waterfront. There were many musicians from this neighborhood including all of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The immigrants, especially the Irish, became the laborers of the city, digging the canals, building, and working on the riverfront. The Irish Channel areas was originally part of the City Of Lafayette (incorporated 1833) which became part of New Orleans in 1852.
