Constructed circa 1920 Helvenston House is a masonry structure consisting of a ground floor, second floor, and unfinished basement. Reflective of Mediterranean Revival style design it has a stucco finish, red ceramic tile, and low-pitched roof. This style is also known for its square, boxy design, spacious rooms, and high ceilings. It features 5 bedrooms, 4 ½ baths, kitchen, large LR and DR. Recent alterations to the home eliminated two key original, historic features: a porte-cochère (a covered entrance large enough for vehicles to pass through) on the west side of the structure, and a large screened sleeping porch on the east side of the structure (sleeping porches are a common feature of historic homes in warm climates). Both the porte-cochère and the sleeping porch were enclosed, and now function as an interior bedroom and interior office, respectively. The property sits on the NW corner of a signaled intersection at the crossing of two major traffic arteries, just one block south of E Silver Springs Blvd, a major thoroughfare. Traffic counts at the intersection are 5,500 on Fort King Street and 2,700 on SE 11th Avenue. The property has extensive frontage along both Fort King Street and SE 11th Ave., and is less than 1 mile from Ocala' s Historic Downtown Square.
