Goodwill was founded in Boston by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and early social innovator. Helms created the Goodwill philosophy of “not charity, but a chance” when he collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired people who were poor to mend and repair the used goods. The goods were then sold or given to the people who repaired them. Over a century later, Goodwill remains a household name and leading nonprofit provider of educational and workforce-related services. Goodwill Industries International (GII) is based in Rockville, MD, outside of Washington, D.C. The Goodwill enterprise is a network of many community-based, autonomous organizations in the United States and Canada with a presence in a dozen other countries. To meet the needs of their local communities, each local Goodwill organization designs its own programs and services to help people find work near where they live.

In the summer heat of 1945, Alice Handel created the sweetest of legacies in Youngstown, Ohio. Using fresh fruit from her backyard garden and her own personal recipes, Alice lovingly made ice cream that quickly became a neighborhood favorite. Handel’s, and a commitment to quality, was born. To this day, Handel’s upholds the traditions Alice started all those years ago. From making each batch fresh daily to using her original methods and recipes, they’re still sharing their homemade ice cream and serving the communities they love so much one scoop at a time.

In August 2010, Bill Fromholzer Jr. (a.k.a. Billy from Philly) opened The Original Steaks & Hoagies in Twinsburg, Ohio–and introduced authentic Philly Cheesesteaks and Hoagies to Northeast Ohio. In the 1980s, Bill’s family owned and operated three Laspada’s Original Steaks & Hoagies Cheesesteak shops in the Philly area. These locations continue to be award-winning steak and hoagie shops today. Bill & his wife made a family decision to move back to the Philly area, so they began looking for someone to take over and maintain quality and standards. In 2017 new owners Jeff and Chef Josh took over and planned to not only keep that same quality product, but to expand the menu and company. On March 24th. 2018, National Cheesesteak Day, they stayed true to that plan and opened The original steaks and hoagies in thriving Fairlawn, Ohio.

In 1980, two friends—Paul Mitchell and John Paul DeJoria—were inspired to create a company that would support the success of hairdressers and provide luxury hair care at an affordable price. From the very beginning, education was a big part of the two friends’ vision. Soon, the company had assembled an A-team of outstanding stylists and educators. Among them was Winn Claybaugh, a top motivational speaker and business expert. As he inspired audiences across America, Winn was spreading a philosophy of business that has helped an entire generation of beauty professionals find success and has profoundly shaped the Paul Mitchell Schools culture. Everything finally came together in 2000 when Winn, John Paul, and Paul’s son Angus Mitchell by that time co-owner of the company that bears his late father’s name they decided to create Paul Mitchell Schools with just one location.
