Armed with a stove and station wagon, coupled with passion and knowledge of cooking Southern Soul Food and Caribbean cuisine, Bennett Caterers was born. Catering to a very diverse population in greater Hartford in 1963, Eva Mae Bennett was very resourceful with her Home Economics background. Limited opportunities in the segregated south forced Eva Mae to work as a domestic. The Jewish families that employed her taught her the art and traditions in the preparation and cooking of kosher meals. Kenneth Bennett, who was no stranger to hard work, soon became employee number two at Bennett Caterers. He had been working in the fields of Jamaica. His cooking skills and knowledge of Jamaican and other Caribbean fair expanded their client base as well as the menu. The breakthrough year, 1973, was the year it all changed. All 9 of their children were employed in the family's thriving business.

She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Textiles and Apparel Studies from Delaware State University. Knowing that wasn't quite enough, she went on to get her Masters in Fashion Design from Drexel University. While still continuing to design for her line Jrée Desirée Collections, she is also a Fashion Design Professor. Her resumé includes Delaware State University, Moore College of Art & Design and Baltimore City Community College. Living by the old adage "be true to your dreams," she continues to follow her heart, and strive to inspire and be inspired by the things and people around her.
