ABOUT 1201 FELIX ST , SAINT JOSEPH, MO 64501
This is a spectacular rare example of the Beaux Arts style building built in 1899, and has an iron skeleton and marble exterior, and is a contributing structure in the Museum Hill Historic District. This building is eligible for historic tax credits, both state and federal, which could give a return of 45% combined. Originally built as a church for The First Church of Christ Scientist and known to be the most expensive church ever built in St. Joseph. The Dome has a highly elaborate foyer with mosaic tile floors, extensive plaster detailing and mahogany wood doors with beveled glass. The auditorium seats 900 and has a balcony section with 43 ft ceiling with a dome and stained glass in the center and extensive plaster ceilings. All stained-glass windows are intact and are religiously neutral. The roof is metal with 4 small domes on each corner and 1 large dome in the middle with a copula top of columns and beacon light. The first floor consists of the foyer, reception room, auditorium with organ, three changing rooms with 2 half baths. The lower level consists of a 3,190 sq ft ballroom, conference/green room, lower foyer with crystal chandeliers, utility rooms, back lower foyer, two miscellaneous rooms and bathrooms. The Dome has a tonally unaltered 31-rank pipe organ which was installed in 1907 by the Hook & Hastings Co. of Boston (Opus 2151). This organ was the largest they made at the time with only three remaining in the US and has received a Historic Citation from the Organ Historical Society. This is a very impressive building and is a major landmark in St Joseph. The building has a steam boiler and two Chrysler AC units which will need to be replaced. Due to the building still in its original condition it has been grandfathered in with most permits and licenses.
