About Westside Outlying
Portland's outer western area is made up of the western fringes of Sherwood, Tualatin, Tigard, Aloha, Hillsboro and the city of Forest Grove. Pacific University, located off Pacific Avenue near the central portion of the city, was founded in 1849. Enrollment at the institution is around 4,000, including graduate students, and the faculty numbers in the hundreds. Given that Forest Grove is a smaller city, the student body here collectively generates a sizable economic impact for local retailers and restaurants during the school year.
Aside from education, healthcare and retail trade jobs power the local economy. Retail development is clustered along the city’s main arterials and in the downtown core. Major big-box names like Safeway, Walmart, and Dollar Tree are located fronting Pacific Avenue. The area is served by one high school and one middle school.
