Located at the edge of the Rio Grande right on the border between the United States and Mexico. Previously known as the Hart’s Mill owned by Simeon Hart, a flour merchant who was born in 1816 in Highland, New York and moved to the Southwest in 1848 as an adjutant in the Missouri cavalry unit, he fought with distinction in the, battle of Santa Cruz de Rosales. In late 1849 he established his flour mill, El Molino and several years later he built his residence which is described by the United States circuit-riding attorney W. W. H. Davis as a large and luxurious residence built in the Mexican style that served for years as a haven for travelers. This is also the spot where Don Juan de Oñate is believed to have led a Spanish expedition in 1598 after discovering the Pass to the North. The area is also known as part of The Camino Real that for more than 200 years it was the major route in the transportation of commercial goods between Mexico City, Chihuahua, Santa Fe, and Taos NM. Pancho Villa camped there in 1913, it was used as a hospital during the Great Depression, and when the Butterfield Stage was running, it was a stagecoach stop for hungry and weary travelers. The officer’s quarters from the Old Fort Bliss are located next to the property, constructed between 1878 and 1893.
