About the Property

Part of the original settlement of New York, Canal Street was once a true canal. The SoHo area began being marketed as a neighborhood of row homes but like most things in New York, that quickly changed. By the 1850s, the stretch of Broadway between Canal and Houston Streets became Tiffany & Company, E.W. Haughwout and other specialty retailers and dry goods establishments in newly constructed cast iron fronted and brownstone palazzos. These were the first cast iron structures, and this form of construction has become synonymous with the area to this day. Set apart from the rest, 2 Wooster, positioned on the corner of Wooster and Canal Streets is comprised of two architecturally significant cast iron facades, built with the same Neo Greek styles of the lavish Soho shopping district buildings. Over the next hundred years, Canal Street transformed and became a source to buy cheap goods of all types. Merchants would sell anything they could get their hands on, and the wide steps and porch of 2 Wooster became an open market for shoppers looking for bargains. Approaching 150 years since it was originally developed, 2 Wooster has undergone a complete redevelopment, in line with the rebirth of street. Today, Canal Street has evolved into a bustling street for the arts, home, fashion, design, food, and creatives of all kinds. Interior designer Roman and Williams flagship store along with a Stephen Star operated restaurant, Canal Street Oysters, fashion label’s Sea’s stunning showroom, and Stadium Goods consignment counter have been the catalysts of Canal Street’s latest transformation, making it one of the coolest destinations in Manhattan.
