The Hibiscus House was built in 1923 by William H. Dowling, owner of the once busy Dowling-Camp Lumber Company of Slater. Slater was located 9 miles north of Ft. Myers and had the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad connecting it with Ft. Myers. Henry Ford loved to go there and watch the sawmill operations.
