Great Local Tavern and Music Venue! The Colfax Tavern & Diner is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Cimarron and Raton in northern New Mexico. It is situated on the northeast junction of US Highway 64 and NM State Road 505. The town of Maxwell, NM is approximately 12 miles to the east; Raton, NM is about 24 miles to the northeast; and Cimarron, NM is 11 miles to the southwest. The Tavern is just north of the old spur of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad where the old West town of Colfax, New Mexico was situated along US Hwy 64 and entrance to the old historic coal mining town of Dawson. In addition to Lake 13 and Stubblefield Lake just down the road from the Tavern, there is great high mountain fishing at Eagle Nest Lake and camping in the Carson National Forest, which are within 30 minutes from Colfax Tavern. Lake Maloya, NE of Raton and Trinidad Lake, west of Trinidad, CO are also within an easy drive from the Tavern. The ski resorts of Angel Fire, Red River and Taos are also within an hour’s drive from the Tavern. Golfing can be found at Raton, Angel Fire and Taos. There are also jet accessible airports located in Angel Fire and Taos, NM. The Tavern has hosted the “Prairie Dog Open” behind the Tavern, where golfers try to hit barrels located in the pasture. Fun Times!! The Tavern is known to host live music with two different stages and dance floors and has hosted some well known celebrities in what has become an Annual Event at the Tavern. A “Big-Name” Summer Kick-Off Concert with country singers Rick Trevino was last-year and the Owners are negotiating to bring in Mark Chestnut for this year. The biggest event of the year is the “Annual Honky-Tonk Hodgepodge” , which is a full weekend of a variety of constant music and camping for 100’s of people from all over. Other special events include Run to Raton Biker Rally, Beach Volleyball, National Wild Turkey Federation Banquet (Father’s Day), Pasture Golf Day, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, New Year’s Day, Superbowl, & Mardi Gras parties to name a few as well as birthday, graduation and other local event parties. The area around Colfax Tavern is known for its spectacular trophy game hunting on private ranches and brings in some interesting hunters from all over the country, who love to share their camaraderie and stories of their hunts over drinks at Tavern. The Owners also raise bucking bulls and do Cowboy seminars, so there are plenty of televised western events and occasional visits from Rodeo Superstars such as this year’s Rookie Bull Rider of the Year, Dalton Kasel.
