Fort Bend County leads the Houston region, as well as much of the state and nation, in demographic excellence. A recent Rice University study declared Fort Bend County the most diverse County in the nation with the percentage breakdown representing 20.8 percent Asian, 24.7 percent Hispanic or Latino, 21.1 percent African-American and 32.5 percent White. According to the Texas State Data Center, Fort Bend County is the fastest growing county in Greater Houston and could have 845,058 residents in 2020. Fort Bend County is a ‘pass through’ county during evacuation in neighboring counties including Galveston and Brazoria Counties. Interstate 69 traverses the center of the county from northeast to southwest, while U.S. 90A crosses from east to west. State highways (SH) 6 and 36 also provide important north-south routes. Neighboring counties include Austin, Brazoria, Harris,Waller and Wharton. The Highway 36 expansion is beginning, which will increase the Traffic on Hwy 36 and Spur 10 considerably. Highway 36A, initiating in Freeport with access to the Port of Freeport, is a major transportation corridor from the Port which runs through Fort Bend County. Ranked 26th in the US in foreign tonnage and 40 miles from the heart of Fort Bend County, the Port of Freeport, with its deep water access and connection to rail services and Highway 36 which runs through Fort Bend County, is a major entryway for large vessels moving goods in and out of the United States.
