DESCRIPTION
Middle Georgia Raceway opened in 1966 as a NASCAR (now Sprint Cup) sanctioned racetrack and remained on the NASCAR Circuit thru 1971. Richard Petty, Bobby Allison and other Hall of Fame members raced and won there. “Federal Revenuers” raided the 10,000 gallon Moonshine still under the track during a race in 1967. Fast forward to 1970 and the 2nd Annual Atlanta (Byron) Pop Festival featuring Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers Band and dozens of well-known rock groups. Official attendance estimates range from 100,000 to over 400,000. After NASCAR, other sanctioned racing was on again, off again until 1982. The movie “Greased Lighting” starring Richard Pryor was filmed at the track in 1976. Occasional concerts featured the likes of Kenny Rogers and Atlanta Rhythm Section until the track was shuttered in 1984. “Googling” Middle Georgia Raceway or 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival reveals the rich history of this historic venue.
