About 404 LINCOLN HWY , MEDICINE BOW, WY 82329
If only the walls could talk, The Historic Virginian Hotel completed in 1911 was used as a “gathering place” and formerly was the largest hotel between Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah. A National Historic Landmark, The Virginian has not changed hands in over 100 years. Named from the novel by Owen Wister, The Virginian, the hotel has been the site of multiple movies and television series over the past century in an authentic western setting. Guests take a step back in time with lush velvet draperies, Victorian wallpaper, clawfoot tubs, antique sleeping rooms, and suites allowing this historical resting place as a desired location. The Hotel is essentially an entire city block consisting of multiple buildings totaling 57 rooms. Although The Historic Virginian is a piece of history, most rooms provide modern amenities including cable television, microwave, and refrigerators. The Hotel is currently operating as lodging and dining and can continue to do so. However, the potential for change is limitless. Options include: partially converting to workforce housing for the various construction projects in the Medicine Bow vicinity; creating a museum destination with overnight accommodations; establishing a retreat destination for large groups with tours, and an RV park expansion for workers and travelers. Located in Medicine Bow, Wyoming this piece of history resides in a place known for its history as a Union Pacific watering station along the Medicine Bow River. North of Medicine Bow is the Shirley Basin a vast prairie. Patrons can also visit Como Bluff known for being one of the most significant locations for paleontology where remains were found for 247 of the 250 Jurassic- era mammals of North America. Medicine Bow may be known for its past, but it is also making history as the area looks to the future. As of June 2020, the state’s largest utility, PacifiCorp/Rocky Mountain Power, began the 416-mile "Gateway South", Energy Gateway transmission expansion initiative. The transmission line will extend from the Aeolus Substation near Medicine Bow (about 10 miles outside of) to the Clover Substation near Mona, Utah. Once completed, the Aeolus Substation will be able to collect the energy generated from nearby wind farms and load it onto a transmission line. The utility’s enormous undertaking will retrofit Wyoming with state-of-the-art wind power and build necessary transmission lines reinforcing Wyoming's legacy as one of the nation's leading energy producers.
