La Encantada Vineyard is a 97 acre producing vineyard located in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA in Santa Barbara County, California. The vineyard was planted in 2000 by Richard Sanford to primarily Pinot Noir (clones 114, 1145, 667, 667, 777, 4 and Swan) with small amounts of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. La Encantada is one of the premier vineyard properties in California. The wines from the vineyard consistently receive scores in the low to mid 90’s from a variety of scoring houses and publications. Currently the grapes are sold to over 30 premium winemakers including: Byron, Foxen, Siduri, Ken Brown, Margerum, Tyler, Hall Wines, and Longoria. Located just seven miles from the Pacific Ocean on the western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, La Encantada is truly an enchanted vineyard. The site and its clonal varieties were hand selected by legendary Richard Sanford, one of the pioneers of this highly acclaimed AVA, who was recently elected to the Vintner’s Hall of Fame. Richard founded both the Sta. Rita Hills AVA and the La Encantada Vineyard. He selected this site for its terroir in the cool climate growing region, defined by the east to west mountain range bordering the Santa Ynez River which directs the cool maritime air from the Pacific Ocean to the west. Every morning a cool layer of marine fog blankets the vineyard. When the fog burns off and the afternoon winds start to blow they accelerate a dramatic variance in temperature. This combined with the diatomaceous soils creates the perfect conditions for the highest quality Pinot Noir grapes to ripen. This is a unique offering of a producing vineyard on a long term ground lease. A new owner could continue to sell the highly sought after grapes to existing winemakers or control the extraordinary fruit for their own brand.
