The Windsor Hotel, also historically known as the Murphy Building, has played a pivotal role in the history and development in the heart of Ogden City's Central Business District. Originally built in 1887 by Civil War veteran George W. Murphy, the two-story brick building was constructed with metal first-story cornice, corbeled brick cornice, transoms, and cast iron columns. Bayed windows were installed on the first level, and segmentally arched windows on the second. For over 50 years Mr. Murphy owned and operated his grocery outlet on the corner of 25'th Street & Wall Avenue, which served the daily needs of local residents, workers, and incoming/outgoing passengers to and from Ogden's railway Station, (the junction of the Union Pacific & Central Pacific railway) known today as Ogden's Union Station. In 1895 a curio shop was opened by business owner Fred L. Smith, which he ran for many years. From 1933 to 1936 as a relief, recovery and reform effort from the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt enacted a series of programs known as the New Deal years. Due to this enactment, throughout the mid 1930's the building was used as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) Community Center and a Carnegie Library free to the public.
