The 9,600 square foot, three-story Victorian style Susong Building, at 501 State St., occupies the historic N.W. corner of State and Lee streets in downtown Bristol, VA. It is the only remaining building on the Virginia side of State Street that is curved at the corner. This building has a rich history and in 2003, it was added to the Bristol Commercial Historic District. In 1898, the Susong Building, built of cut stone and pressed brick, was considered to be the finest building in downtown Bristol! Over the years, this building had had a wide variety of owners and business uses from a high-end clothing store to a coffee shop. The Susong Building has a total of three floors. The first floor, which is for lease, is a commercial space while the second and third floors will be residential and have plans for a total of five lofts. The first floor is just under 3,000 square feet and includes two entrances for the commercial space, one on State Street and a side door on Lee Street. This building is located on the main road of downtown Bristol, State Street. State Street is unique because on one side of the road is Tennessee and on the other side is Virginia. Actually, right in front of the Susong Building, in the middle of the road, is where Geico filmed one of their commercials and has become a commonly photographed spot for tourists. In direct view of the building is also the iconic “Bristol – A Good Place to Live” sign, that is also a “must-have” photograph for tourists. In the back of the Susong Building is a newly renovated hotel and restaurant that is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2018! This will be the first of many hotels coming to the downtown area. Two buildings down from the Susong Building is the Bristol Train Station which is a popular venue for conferences, banquets, weddings, and special events. Also, if Amtrak comes to Bristol, the Susong Building will be one of the first places people encounter when walking towards downtown. Bristol’s downtown is growing! There are several new lofts, office spaces, breweries, and venues that have either already opened or will be opening sometime in the near future!
