DESCRIPTION
With numerous assets, the Port of Port St. Joe is poised for development and expansion. It is one of 15 state-designated ports within Florida and one of only three ports along North Florida’s Gulf Coast. The expansion of the Panama Canal and the inception of Post-Panamax shipping is expected to shift some non-competitive freight handling operations from larger ports to smaller ones. These operations are especially likely to move to ports with shorter ship-to-market routes. With a direct route north from the Panama Canal, the Port of Port St. Joe is an ideal candidate for this shift. The Port is a state-designated deepwater port situated in the sheltered waters of St. Joseph Bay. The federally approved navigational channel depths range from 35 to 37 feet, while the federally approved turning basin and harbor channel depths are between 32 and 35 feet. The port offers 1,900 linear feet of existing deepwater bulkhead, with the potential to expand to 5,500 linear feet. It provides direct access to the U.S. Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and has convenient rail and interstate access. Additionally, the Port is one of only three state-designated ports along North Florida’s Gulf Coast. The Port offers barge access to inland rivers and waterways, including the U.S. Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which features a channel size of 12’x125’. The Gulf County Canal connects the Gulf of Mexico with the U.S. Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, running approximately 1,050 miles from Carrabelle, Florida, to Brownsville, Texas. This navigable inland waterway provides access via the inland river system to major cities such as Chicago, Pittsburgh, Memphis, and Tulsa. The Port is served by AN Railway, which connects to the CSX Transportation Class I mainline. The Port offers direct access to I-10 via SR-71. It is located just 21 miles from the Apalachicola Regional Airport via U.S. Highway 98 and 57 miles from the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport in Panama City Beach.
