ABOUT DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS
Downtown Las Vegas encompasses the area around Fremont Street, the site of Las Vegas’ first hotel and a number of the earliest casinos. Downtown is in the midst of a revitalization effort that is drawing new businesses to the area.
The Fremont Street Experience is a pedestrian mall that occupies five blocks of western Fremont Street and is downtown’s casino corridor. It also features entertainment experiences, including free concerts and light and sound shows, for which the video displays were upgraded in 2019. Also part of the revitalization effort is the 61-acre Symphony Park master-planned area, which will add multifamily housing, a hotel, and retail to the existing Smith Center for the Performing Arts, DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, and Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. The Arts District, an 18-block area south of Fremont Street, is home to art galleries, antique shops, boutiques, and numerous restaurants and cafes.
While the leisure and hospitality sector is a significant source of employment for the area, downtown Las Vegas is also home to many government jobs. The Clark County Government Center is located in downtown, as well as the City of Las Vegas government, Southern Nevada Water Authority, and Internal Revenue Service. Law firms are also prevalent in the area due to the presence of several courthouses.
