Executive Summary
The Mentor Building was built in 1906 and designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, a leader in the American Craftsman movement. The building is designed in a uniquely Chicago style with retained neoclassical elements. Unlike other buildings in the style, the Mentor building has clear base, middle, and top sections, reminiscent of European tradition. In 1928 Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. leased the lower floors of the Mentor Building with aspirations of eventually taking over the property. Twenty years later Carson's family made good on their plans for the Mentor and purchased the building, expanding into the lower floors of the building. In 1998, developer Joseph Freed & Co. converted floors 3-5 into office condos, and floors 6 thru 17 into residential condos. As part of the renovation, the entire facade was restored to the original design.
