PROPERTY OVERVIEW
The U.S. Steel Tower in Pittsburgh is an iconic skyscraper located at 600 Grant Street in the city’s downtown. Completed in 1970, it stands 841 feet (256 meters) tall with 64 floors, making it the tallest building in Pittsburgh and a defining feature of its skyline. Originally built as the headquarters for the United States Steel Corporation, the tower was designed by the architectural firm Harrison, Abramovitz & Abbe and engineered by Leslie E. Robertson Associates. Architecturally, the building is notable for its triangular footprint with indented corners and its innovative use of Cor-Ten steel, which develops a rust-like protective coating over time, giving the facade its distinctive reddish-brown color. This material choice reduced maintenance needs and symbolized Pittsburgh’s industrial heritage. The tower also pioneered the use of liquid-filled fireproofed columns, an advanced fire safety feature at the time. Its flat roof spans one acre, and it once featured a heliport.
