Dollar General is a U.S. chain of variety stores headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. As of March 23, 2016, it operated 12,438 stores located in 43 states. Dollar General was founded in 1939 by Cal Turner in Scottsville, Kentucky as J.L. Turner & Son, Inc. In 1968 the business changed its name to Dollar General Corporation. Taylorsville is a town nestled in the scenic foothills of Alexander County in North Carolina. It is the county seat of Alexander County and is included in the Hickory Lenoir Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a combined population of 365,497. Alexander County is part of the heavily industrialized Unifour Area which also includes Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties and has the third highest percentage of manufacturing workers as a part of the total workforce of any county in the southeastern United States. Alexander County' s local transportation corridors are along US Highway 64, NC Highway 90, NC Highway 16, and NC Highway 127, all of which provide easy access to Interstate 40 and Interstate 77 and the major urban areas of Statesville, Charlotte and Hickory, NC. Hickory, NC is located in the western portion of North Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 50 miles northwest of Charlotte, 80 miles east of Asheville, and 35 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The anchor city of the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton MSA, Hickory' s most recent population estimate is 40,361.
