Minnesota Retailers Association announced the community of Alexandria as the Retail Community of the Year in the 2018 Minnesota’s Retail Champions program. The city population is 13,045 within city limits, but the unique layout of over 300 lakes in the county makes the service area more like 35,000 people. It’s a perfect balance of size which offers quiet and quaint relaxation, while also possessing comfortable full services and all the best shopping, dining and overnight accommodations that visitors can imagine. While all the lakes and woods provide great outdoor opportunities, there is also plenty of fun around many  attractions. Tourism events include a Grape Stomp hosted by the Carlos Creek Winery every September, an Apple Fest in October, the Douglas County Fair every August, and Art in the Park every July. The city has a museum housing the controversial Kensington Runestone, which is thought by some to indicate that Vikings had visited the area in the 14th century. Outside the museum stands Big Ole, a 25-foot-tall statue of a Viking, which was built for the World's Fair in New York City in 1964. The city hosts the annual Vikingland Band Festival parade marching championship. The top employer in the area is the Douglas County Hospital, which employs over 850 residents in the area. In 2013, Alexandria was picked as a “Top 10 Best Small Town” by the Livability website. Alexandria lies 70 miles northwest from St. Cloud, and 132 miles northwest from the Twin-Cities Metro Area.
