In the 1950s, thinking that the capital city of Charleston was downriver from a lot of the high plateaus in West Virginia that got a lot of water and might flood, some progressive state and national politicians got together and caused three major flood control dams to be built. One was the Summersville Lake Dam, which is the largest earthen dam in the world. The greatest thing that happened was not that the flood waters were controlled, but that a sensational reservoir was created. For over 60 years, the Summersville Dam and Lake have been monumental tourist attractions to our state, which already is a tremendous tourist attraction in itself. We are “Wild and Wonderful West Virginia,” and our greatest asset, aside from the people that live here, is our mountain beauty. Over the last 50 years, thousands of cabins have been built all over our fine state, and the ones that are the most popular are along the four-lane highways. This property is only a few miles from a major four-lane highway that connects I 79 at Sutton to I 64/77 at Beckley and traverses some of the most beautiful mountain land on the eastern seaboard. Tucked back in the hills, immediately adjacent to a finely manicured Civil War Battlefield, the Carnifex Ferry Cabins are a terrific destination for folks tired of the urban sprawl and gridlock on the interstates around major metropolitan areas. When you get here, you forget where you came from, because life is just a bit slower in Summersville. (That's a good thing.)
