In the 1950s, thinking that the capital city of Charleston was downriver from a lot of the high plateaus in West Virginia that got a lot of water and might flood, some progressive state and national politicians got together and caused three major flood control dams to be built. One was the Summersville Lake Dam, which is the largest earthen dam in the world.
