Wilkinsburg is a borough in Allegheny County, adjacent to the city of Pittsburgh. The Wilkinsburg Library was founded in 1899 as a branch of the Braddock Library, which was the first of the Carnegie Libraries in the nation. In 1916 the world’s first commercially licensed radio station, KDKA, began broadcasting here as an experimental station from a small garage before being launched with its current center in 1920. Over the years the borough has become economically depressed but the efforts of the Wilkinsburg Community Development Center on Wood Street has become a huge part in bringing positive change to the neighborhood through helping local businesses move in, spreading the word about events going on and being the people of Wilkinsburg together.
