Once a staging post on the Great North Road between Edinburgh and London, it remains the home of the Earls of Northumberland, originally the most powerful of the medieval northern baronial families. The town is served by the main A1(T) and the main East Coast railway line which has a station at the nearby village of Alnmouth. Alnwick benefits from a significant tourist trade, particularly in the summer months, with visitors attracted to the Alnwick Gardens, Alnwick Castle (which featured in the Harry Potter movies), Balliffgate Museum and Gallery, Barter Books (one of the largest second hand book shops in the UK) and The Hulne Park, which was landscaped by Capability Brown, together with a number of excellent local restaurants, shops and public houses.
