The winter months bring visitors avoiding the colder climates of the north, when the population of the area within 50 miles of Blythe has been known to exceed 500,000. The area is popular with campers and hikers and has six parks, seven campgrounds, seven RV parks, 3 boat ramps onto the Colorado River, and an 18-hole public golf course. Blythe hosts the Blythe Blue Grass Festival annually the third weekend of January. Dove hunting is popular in Blythe. The hunting season starts every September 1. Blythe has a hot desert climate, featuring extremely hot summers and mild winters. Blythe is within 4 hours via car of 10% of the United States' population. State facilities in Blythe include Resources Agency, California Department of Fish and Game, California Highway Patrol, California Department of Motor Vehicles, California Department of Food and Agriculture, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation-Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation-Ironwood State Prison and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Federal facilities in Blythe include the U.S. Border Patrol, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S Postal Service. The Blythe Mesa Solar Power Project, also known as the Blythe Solar Energy Center, is a 235 megawatt (MWAC) photovoltaic power plant near the city of Blythe in Riverside County, California.[1] It occupies about 2,000 acres of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management in the Mojave Desert. The construction uses CdTe thin film panels from the U.S. firm First Solar, and the majority of the output is being sold to Kaiser Permanente and Southern California Edison under 20-year power purchase agreements. The project is located adjacent to the 250 MW McCoy Solar Energy Project, together forming a larger 485 MW complex. The 21 megawatt Blythe Photovoltaic Power Plant is a photovoltaic (PV) solar project in Blythe. Commercial operation began in December 2009. Electricity generated by the power plant is being sold to Southern California Edison under a 20-year power purchase agreement.[1] Another 20 MW plant called NRG Solar Blythe II came online in April 2017.
