About 831 OAK ST , TERRE HAUTE, IN 47807
Prime investment opportunity to piggy back on successful downtown retail and restaurant scene. Opportunities to rent out upstairs as an apartment or another business. Large fenced in lots for beer garden, parking, storage, manufacturing etc. Turn key business set up (see pics) and everything is included. Charming building with an original 1940 beer mural on the east side. Jeffrey Hock is looking to history to bring a new business to the downtown Terre Haute area. The boutique business, at 831 Oak St., plans to brand itself under the name “StumpHole Moonshine,” but is incorporated as Terre Haute Distilling Co. LLC. Hock said he got the business name idea from the term stump hole whiskey, a type of Prohibition-era moonshine whiskey that was hidden in the holes of tree stumps. This week, Terre Haute painter Mike Neary began work on a 20-foot by 9-foot mural of “StumpHole Moonshine, Terre Haute Distilling Co. LLC,” on metal siding on the back side of the building at corner of Oak and S. Ninth Street. “The bottling plant was across the street. This was kind of their neighborhood tavern. The limestone step is beveled from foot traffic,” Rowe said Monday while showing the exterior of the building. “Drink Champagne Velvet Beer” is on the sign, with the name Andy Byrne on the top. Byrne operated a grocery story in the 1920s at 831 Oak St., which around 1934, became a saloon, Rowe said. He estimates the sign was painted “in the early post-Prohibition.” The building was later operated as the Crown Lounge and the Bent Elbow taverns. Rowe tuckpointed the Oak Street building’s brick in that 2009 project. Hock said he is excited about the new business venture, adding, “We are bringing back history.” The Terre Haute Distilling Co. is listed in Terre Haute directories from 1848 to 1908. This business is for sale if you are interested for $45K.
