The original structure was built by Nathaniel Dudley (c. 1729) and was subsequently owned by Lyman Munger who sold the property in 1799 to the infamous Captain Edward Griffin. During the 1800’s the property traded hands several times until 1909 when Martha Hale and her husband William Wright Harts purchased the home. Gen. Harts, a West Point graduate (1889), rose to prominence during an illustrious career culminating with his post WWI appointment as military governor to Paris, Chief of Staff of the Army of Occupation in Germany and then military aid to President Woodrow Wilson. In addition to all his other responsibilities General William H. Harts, as a member of the Army Corps of Engineers, was a lead supervisor who oversaw the construction of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This 1.24 acre parcel and the preliminary site density plan allows for up to 7 condo units to be constructed; 2 units within the existing structure and 5 others in two locations shown on the preliminary plan.
