The region is dedicated to upgrading and developing the area, and the Big Spring EDC has currently invested $7.3 million and 3.4 miles of new railroad track (3.7 miles) and upgrades. The city also is seated in the Permian Basin which is among the largest producers of oil and natural gas, and with approximately 2.2 million net acres, Chevron is one of the Permian Basin’s largest net acreage holders. Currently, there are 493 operating rigs in the basin, and an increase of 96 rigs year-to-date. Furthermore, Big Spring is a center for health care including a 150-bed private hospital serving the general public to a Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (2.3 miles), a State mental health facility and a Texas State Veterans Home.
