Description
For someone looking to build a hotel, the buildings would need to be torn down. For someone with vision, this property has a very entailed history. It was built in 1751 by Isaac Garrison who was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Cornwall regiment during the Revolutionary War. Himself and his son Beverly were captured by the British at the Battle of Fort Montgomery and later released. Molly Corbin lived here as a boarder while stationed with the Invalid Regiment at West Point. She was the first woman to receive a pension for wartime service; she is buried in the West Point Cemetery. Corneilus Kingsland Garrison was born in the house in 1809 and went on to be the 5th Mayor of San Francisco. http://www.sfmuseum.org/hist10/corneliusgarrison.html In the early 19th century, it was operated as a restaurant and boardinghouse called The Chimney Corner Tea House by Walter Garrison and his wife, and it has been said that the Marx brothers stayed here at the height of their fame and a Japanese Emissary stayed while on his way to deliver a message to President Roosevelt at his home in Hyde Park to warn him of Pearl Harbour. The fireplace in the house was measured and photos used to recreate the fireplace in the Swann Tavern in VA. Letters from the Head of the Department of the Interior in 1938 document this. From 2009-2013 it was operated as The Garrison House Historic Inn and Gift Shoppe. When we first opened the B&B a gentleman from the Underground Railroad Society stopped by asking about the history of the property and said that he thought that it was likely a stop on the Underground Railroad due to the proximity to the river and the root cellar in the older part of the house. The property has a NYS Marker but is not on the National Registry due to too many modern upgrades, so the building could be demolished to build something else, there is no impediment for that. The house needs a total overhaul- new windows (all 55 of them!) and a new roof. Many of the original doors are still in use, would need to be restored as would most of the floors, many original were painted. To keep the structure would truly be a huge labor of love, but for someone interested in preserving Revolutionary History, this 8 bedroom 5 full and 2 half bath building would make an amazing and extremely profitable B&B. With the history and connection to West Point as well as the proximity to roads and rail, this would be a goldmine for someone with vision The barn could be turned into more guest rooms or a dining hall and there would be room for expansion on the almost 2 acres.
