The Caves of Castillejo Museum in Méntrida is a space of immense heritage and ethnographic richness. It occupies two of these underground structures, currently owned by the Méntrida City Council, the driving force behind this project along with the Toledo Provincial Council. Every corner of this evocative traditional architecture offers a journey into the town's past and a meeting with those who, over the centuries, used them for their work.
The Land of Torrijos is a natural region that stretches between the Alberche and Guadarrama rivers, north of the Tagus. It is an area where clays, sands, marls, and gypsum predominate. Agricultural activities, especially viticulture, stand out here. The construction of these elements, through excavations in the ground and brick reinforcements, has been carried out at least since the Middle Ages and has left us today with one of the most unique examples of traditional architecture in Castilla-La Mancha, a cultural heritage that we must know and protect.
