I have worked in real estate for about twenty years, and I invest in it myself.
Most of my clients are buying their first property, and most of them are nervous about it. That is normal. A lot of them start out looking at condos and end up in a two to four unit building, living in one unit while the tenants cover most of the mortgage. Chicago is one of the only big cities where that is still possible at these prices, because buildings here sell for far less than it would cost to build them today.
I also work with people buying a single family home, and with sellers who want the highest price the market will pay. I own rentals and I have been through plenty of rehabs, so when I walk a building with you I can tell you what the work will cost and what it is worth once it is done.
I have sold roughly $100 million in real estate over my career. About one in five of my clients lives somewhere else and buys here, so I am comfortable running the whole process for someone who cannot walk the property themselves.
