John Mathai serves as the Director of Development at Freshwater Development, where he oversees the planning and pre-development of a mixed-use project in downtown Traverse City. In this role, he manages consultants and trades, ensuring strategic coordination and execution during the early phases of development.
Before joining Freshwater, John was a Sustainability Project Manager at Simplehuman, where he led initiatives in land entitlement, land-use planning, prefabricated modular housing design, and low-carbon building engineering and construction. At Freshwater, he also directs the company’s sustainability and innovation efforts, focusing on cost-effective strategies to integrate advanced technologies and construction techniques for a cleaner planet.
John holds a Master of Science (M.S.) in Real Estate Development from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Sustainable Engineering from Olin College. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and an avid adventurer who enjoys exploring on his bikes.
