Castle & Cooke is a privately held real estate development and investment company founded in 1851 by Samuel Northrup Castle and Amos Starr Cooke in Hawaii. Originally a general merchandise store in Honolulu, the firm became one of Hawaii's Big Five companies and invested heavily in the state's sugar and pineapple industries during the territorial era. In 1961, Castle & Cooke acquired the Hawaiian Pineapple Company, later renamed Dole Food Company, and became the world's largest fruit producer. Following severe financial challenges in Hawaii's agricultural sector, the company was renamed Dole Food Company in 1991. In 1995, the real estate operations were spun off and reformed as Castle & Cooke under the ownership of David H. Murdock, who also controlled Dole. Murdock took the company private in 2000 and held it until his death in June 2025 at age 102.
Castle & Cooke operates primarily in real estate development and property management across Hawaii and California. The company's Hawaii portfolio spans residential master-planned communities, commercial developments, retail centers, office buildings, agritourism operations, and aviation services. In Central Oahu, the firm delivered over 16,000 homes in its Mililani community between 1968 and 2008 and is currently developing Koa Ridge, a 576-acre master-planned community projected to deliver 3,500 homes. The company also owns and manages the Dole Cannery complex in Iwilei, which includes office space and the Shops at Dole Cannery retail center totaling approximately 220,000 square feet. In California, Castle & Cooke owns the 834,000-square-foot Crossings at Corona power center and develops residential communities including Highgate at Seven Oaks in Bakersfield. Additional holdings include brick and building materials manufacturing, Flexi-Van chassis leasing operations, the Four Seasons Hotel & Spa in Westlake Village, the Dole Plantation tourist attraction, and aviation services at Honolulu International Airport.
