Founded in 2004 by GI Partners and headquartered in Austin, Texas since 2021, the company operates as the fourth-largest publicly traded U.S. REIT. Digital Realty provides data center, colocation, and interconnection services to over 5,000 customers, including cloud providers, enterprises, network operators, and technology companies across multiple industry verticals such as financial services, IT services, manufacturing, healthcare, and telecommunications.
The company went public through an initial public offering in November 2004, when it owned 23 properties totaling 5.6 million square feet. Digital Realty has expanded through a series of acquisitions, including Telx for $1.9 billion in 2015, DuPont Fabros Technology for $7.8 billion in 2017, Brazilian data center operator Ascenty for $1.8 billion in 2018, and European provider Interxion for $8.4 billion in 2019. In January 2022, the company acquired a 55% stake in Teraco Data Centers, expanding its presence in Africa.

The company's portfolio spans the Americas (22 metros), EMEA (27 metros), and Asia Pacific (10 metros), with assets concentrated in key markets including Northern Virginia, Frankfurt, Singapore, London, Tokyo, and Chicago. The company's platform, known as PlatformDIGITAL, provides over 234,000 cross-connections and direct access to major cloud platforms including AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle, IBM, and Alibaba.
