Halpern Enterprises is a privately held, family-owned commercial real estate firm based in Atlanta that owns and operates more than 50 retail shopping centers totaling more than 3.7 million square feet across five Southeastern states. The company was founded in 1959 by Bernard Halpern, a Polish immigrant who arrived in America in 1938 at age 16. After purchasing his own grocery store and developing small apartment complexes in Atlanta, Halpern transitioned into retail shopping centers in the early 1960s. Following Bernard's death in 1980, his family assumed management of the company. Today, third-generation family members hold key leadership positions. The firm focuses on neighborhood, community, and power retail centers in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Halpern pursues a long-term hold strategy, retaining ownership and management of all properties rather than pursuing dispositions. The company targets both stabilized assets and value-add opportunities anchored by grocers or national retailers in high-density trade areas with expansion or redevelopment potential. Growth occurs through acquisitions and ground-up development, with dedicated leasing, management, and maintenance staff for each center. In May 2026, Halpern acquired Athens Marketplace, a 74,224-square-foot shopping center in Athens, Alabama, fully leased to tenants including TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Ulta Beauty, and Five Below.
