Metropolitan Transportation Authority was created by New York State legislation in 1965 as a public benefit corporation. The authority operates a broad regional transportation network that includes New York City Transit, the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bus Company, and Bridges and Tunnels, while also overseeing construction and capital planning across the system. Services span subway, bus, commuter rail, bridge, tunnel, fare, and accessibility functions for a large travel area around New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut.
