Peterson Companies is a privately held real estate development and investment firm headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. Founded in 1965 by Milton V. Peterson, the company has developed, managed, and invested in commercial real estate across the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for six decades. The firm operates across multiple asset classes, including retail, multifamily, office, industrial, self-storage, and data center development. Peterson Companies is structured as a privately owned entity, allowing for flexibility in capital deployment and investment decisions across market cycles.
The company's development portfolio includes National Harbor, a 350-acre mixed-use waterfront community in Maryland featuring over 500,000 square feet of Class-A office space, 160 shops, 40 restaurants, and more than 3,400 hotel rooms. Additional developments include Downtown Silver Spring, Fairfax Corner, Fair Lakes, Rio Washingtonian Center, and the Dulles Discovery office campus in Chantilly, which houses Central Intelligence Agency operations. Peterson's investment strategy shifted during the past decade from primarily land acquisition and development entitlements to include direct acquisition of stabilized income-producing assets, particularly in multifamily and industrial sectors.
From 2023 through mid-2025, Peterson Companies acquired more than 2,100 multifamily units, including The Batley (432 units in Washington, D.C.) for $155 million in July 2025 and 8001 Woodmont (322 units in Bethesda, Maryland) for $194 million in February 2025. The firm's geographic footprint extends throughout Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland, Washington, D.C., and into the West Virginia panhandle and Richmond. Recent asset sales include Liberty Crossing campus to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for $531 million in 2023, Dulles Discovery 2 to the CIA for $246.4 million in June 2025, and a 504-acre entitled data center site in Stafford County to Stack Infrastructure for $302.3 million in January 2025.
