Executive Summary
The Schiller Hardware Building is located in the Phoenix Hill Historic District in downtown Louisville, KY. Named after a grassy knoll in the neighborhood, Phoenix Hill was once home to German and Irish immigrants, many of whom came to the United States in the mid-1800’s. Schiller Hardware was constructed in 1898, and represents Italianate Victorian architecture. In 1915, United Furniture Co., the building’s longest established tenant, operated out of this location until the late 1970s. In 1980, Schiller Hardware, a local hardware store founded in 1929, relocated to 445 East Market Street where they operated until 1999. At that time, the building was sold and renovated shortly thereafter to accommodate its current use as commercial offices and retail.
