The San Francisco Chronicle has an illustrious history entwined with the city’s own development. Established in1865, the iconic newspaper has long stood as a chronicle of the city’s events, culture, and progress, establishing a collective memory of generations of San Franciscans. San Francisco born William Randolph Hearst started the Hearst Newspaper empire in 1887 with the purchase of the San Francisco Examiner. The modern day Hearst Corporation further cemented its newspaper legacy in the city with its purchase of the Chronicle in 2000. In addition to acquiring the definitive record of San Francisco’s current events, Hearst also came into possession of the Chronicle’s real estate holdings – namely The Chronicle Building at 901 Mission Street. Having outgrown its office at 690 Market Street (now known as the “Old Chronicle Building”), the Chronicle commissioned a new headquarters at 901 Mission in 1924. The consolidated newsroom and publishing plant was built in Gothic Revival style – said to represent the scholastic spirit of the newspaper business. The building’s façade was redone in 1968 with much of the ornate detailing removed to make room for cleaner, sleeker stucco cladding. Many relics of the original design remain on the interior, however, including arches in the lobby and several stain glass windows. Since its construction, the building has been home to the San Francisco Chronicle as well as a variety of other creative office tenants, including Square, Yahoo, The Hub, Building Connected, and the non-profit, Best Buddies to name a few.
